Biden wins Michigan, fueled by high turnout in Detroit.

first_imgBIRMINGHAM, Mich. — Joseph R. Biden Jr. has won the state of Michigan, clawing back another state that was long part of the Democratic Party’s bulwark in the industrial North until President Trump narrowly prevailed four years ago.Mr. Biden’s path to the presidency is now clearer: After being declared the winner in Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday, he now needs to win Arizona and Nevada to amass enough electoral votes to become the next president. And he is leading in both states.- Advertisement – With Wisconsin already in Mr. Biden’s column, victory in Michigan would give the former vice president enough votes in the Electoral College to become the next president, assuming that he also remains ahead in Arizona and Nevada.Mr. Biden’s narrow win in Michigan — he was ahead of Mr. Trump by about 67,000 votes, or roughly one percentage point as of late Wednesday afternoon — was the product of extremely high turnout in Detroit, where an underwhelming performance with African Americans in 2016 helped doom Hillary Clinton. Mr. Biden also benefited from a surge of support in the economically and racially diverse suburbs north of the city. Mr. Trump was also the beneficiary of an energized base of support, which turned out for him in larger numbers than 2016, but it was not enough to outpace Mr. Biden.- Advertisement – Michigan became a place of intense interest for the Biden and Trump campaigns in the final days of the race, with its mix of working class industry towns, well-heeled suburbs, white, Black, urban and rural putting it in play for both parties. Mr. Trump held three rallies over two days in the some of the state’s more conservative areas, reflecting his reliance on his white, working class base. But in many of the suburban areas that previously helped put him over the top, Michiganders this year soured on the president and gave Mr. Biden an edge that Mrs. Clinton did not have in 2016. In bellwether Macomb County, for instance, Mr. Trump is ahead by eight points this year, after winning it by more than 11 points four years ago.In Oakland County, the state’s second largest and a Republican stronghold not long ago, Mr. Biden’s win was nothing short of a blowout. He was ahead by 14 points, indicative of a larger shift underway in American suburbs as the Trump presidency has created a aversion to the Republican Party. In 2016, Mrs. Clinton won Oakland County by 8 points. – Advertisement – Still, the Biden victory was not without red flags for Democrats in a state that remains very much on a knife’s edge politically. In the race for Senate, Democrats did not expect their first-term incumbent, Gary Peters, to be within a few thousand votes of losing — a development that could leave Democrats with no net gain of seats in the upper chamber this year if he is defeated in his race against John James, a 39-year-old combat veteran and businessman the Republican Party invested in heavily. Mr. Peters pulled slightly ahead late Wednesday as more votes from Detroit were processed, but that race has not been called. – Advertisement – And Mr. Biden’s thin margin was not as large as Democrats had predicted — nor did it point to the friendly atmosphere for the party that public polls suggested.last_img read more

While the gameplay is quite similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man, several tweaks are incorporated to make the gameplay smoother and sleeker. We concluded in our review, “It’s a successful expansion of Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe, but it’s a new paragraph, rather than a new chapter. Hopefully it will give us the latter next time around. And though it’s also good for representation, it still has a ways to go.”Spider-Man: Miles Morales release dateA PlayStation exclusive, Spider-Man: Miles Morale is set to release on November 12.- Advertisement – – Advertisement – Spider-Man: Miles Morales picks up a year after the event of the previous game’s DLC, Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps. Biden’s Transition Teams Suggest Tougher Wall Street Oversight

first_img“Private funds that have been counting on getting unfettered access to people’s retirement account should begin rethinking their strategy,” Ms. Roper said. The Biden campaign does not permit members of the agency review teams to talk to the media, so it is difficult to know what they are thinking and planning. But it is clear that their ability to affect immediate change in financial regulation could be constrained by a last-minute push by Republicans to get two remaining Trump nominees onto the Federal Reserve Board.- Advertisement – Jelena McWilliams, whom Mr. Trump appointed chairwoman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, has signaled that she plans to serve out her full term, which does not end until 2023. But Mr. Biden will be able to replace the acting comptroller of the currency quickly and is expected to do so, and other important roles, like Treasury secretary and head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, are likely to go swiftly to Democrats. That is why the industry is attuned to who is on the agency review teams, which could set the tone for what is coming.“It will be a significant change in the orientation of financial regulation if these people are going to be the ones writing the policies,” said Christopher E. Campbell, assistant secretary of the Treasury for financial institutions from 2017-18. “From my perspective, the landing teams were folks that appeared to be more activist than centrist.”- Advertisement – – Advertisement –center_img Senate Republicans made clear on Thursday that they will try to confirm the pair, Judy Shelton and Christopher Waller, before Mr. Trump leaves office. If both are approved, which appears likely, Mr. Trump will have filled six of the seven seats on the powerful Fed board, locking in a conservative majority that could last for years and potentially pave the way for a continuation of lighter-touch financial oversight. While the Fed may be best known for setting interest rates — a largely nonpartisan exercise — it is also among the most powerful financial regulators. And while monetary policy votes are shared with the Fed’s regional banks, only board members have votes on the rules that govern the largest banks. There will be limitations on what a Republican-heavy Fed can accomplish on its own. Many of the more important bank restrictions — like tweaks to the Volcker Rule, which prevents banks from betting with their own money — have historically been made on a cross-agency basis.- Advertisement –last_img read more

Prospects for seasonal flu vaccine supply improving

first_imgAug 31, 2005 (CIDRAP News) – Prospects for an adequate supply of seasonal influenza vaccine this year brightened today with federal approval of a new flu vaccine and a report of progress in fixing problems at Chiron’s flu vaccine plant in England. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced approval of GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK’s) Fluarix vaccine for use in adults. In addition, the FDA said Chiron has made “significant progress” in addressing problems at its flu vaccine plant, where contamination last year forced the company to scrub the sale of about 48 million doses of vaccine to the United States.Referring to both developments, Curtis Allen, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told CIDRAP News, “This is very good news. We’re cautiously optimistic, but there are still things that are unknown.”Allen, who works in the CDC’s National Immunization Program, said the CDC currently estimates the US flu vaccine supply for this season will range from about 79 million to 87 million doses. That includes 50 million doses from Sanofi Pasteur, 3 million doses from MedImmune, 8 million from GSK, and between 18 million and 26 million from Chiron.”That would be roughly equivalent to the number of doses that are used in a typical flu season,” Allen said. The demand for flu shots this year, in the wake of last year’s shortage, is a big unknown, he said. “We don’t really know how the public is going to react this year and the impact of last season on [vaccine] uptake.” People who didn’t get vaccinated during last year’s shortage and never caught the flu may feel they don’t need a shot, while others may hurry to get a shot because they fear another shortage, Allen said.He said some recommendations on priorities for flu immunization would be published tomorrow in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The FDA said Fluarix, which contains inactivated flu virus, is the first vaccine to gain approval under the agency’s accelerated approval process. The process allows the FDA to license products on the basis of results that are “reasonably likely to predict ultimate clinical benefit,” as opposed to actual proof of efficacy.”Accelerated approval has allowed us to evaluate and approve Fluarix in record time so that we can make available additional safe and effective flu vaccines,” FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford said in a news release. “I commend our Center for Biologics for taking extraordinary steps to help us be better prepared for both the upcoming and future flu seasons.”GSK showed that Fluarix generated levels of protective antibodies that are likely to be effective in preventing flu, the FDA said. The agency said it evaluated data from four clinical studies involving about 1,200 adults, as well as data from post-marketing reports from other countries where the vaccine is used. Officials said they would also require the company to conduct further clinical studies.Fluarix has been in use since 1992 and is currently distributed in 92 countries, GSK said. The report on progress at Chiron’s British plant came after a 9-day FDA inspection in July and subsequent communications between Chiron and the FDA. The company said in a news release, “The FDA found Chiron’s responses and proposed corrective actions to the FDA inspection observations . . . to be ‘generally acceptable.'”Dr. Jesse Goodman of the FDA said in a statement, “The letter that we issued to them this week is a positive development and shows significant progress on their part. However, additional work is needed to determine the amount of vaccine Chiron may be able to supply the U.S. market for the upcoming flu season. FDA will evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of their corrective actions going forward. In addition, any vaccine produced must pass all tests for safety and potency before it can be marketed in the U.S.”The British government suspended Chiron’s manufacturing license when contamination was found at the plant last year. But British regulators authorized the company to resume production in March, after the company improved its equipment and processes.”We remain focused on our objective of delivering Fluvirin vaccine to the US market in support of public health efforts to prepare for the upcoming influenza season,” Chiron CEO Howard Pien said in the news release.See also:FDA announcement of Fluarix approvalhttp://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/2005/ucm108481.htmlast_img read more

CDC sets rules for handling 1918 flu virus

first_img “We’ve learned why this virus was so deadly and we know it’s easily transmitted from person to person,” CDC Director Julie Gerberding said in a news release. “But there is a lot we don’t know so it’s only logical that we take immediate steps to regulate this virus as a select agent as an added way to protect the public.” The designation means scientists and laboratories that want to work with the virus must register with the CDC and ensure that they can handle the virus safely and in accord with government guidelines, the CDC said. A group of scientists appointed from several federal agencies had unanimously recommended designation of the 1918 virus as a select agent, the CDC said. Using molecular biology techniques, CDC scientists subsequently reconstructed the virus. Two weeks ago they reported that the reassembled virus was highly lethal to mice and that it grew explosively in lab cultures of human lung cells. See also: The CDC statement did not specify which of the four formal levels of biological security (biosafety, or BSL) will be required for labs handling the virus, but Skinner called it “3-plus.” He said, “It was worked on here at CDC at 3-plus, which meant that all the BSL-3 level conditions were met and also enhanced measures were taken in regard to air filtration as well as the fact that the laboratorians were required to shower out before leaving the lab space.” The CDC published the select agent classification in yesterday’s Federal Register. Under the rule, parties that possess, use, or transfer the virus or its eight key gene segments must register with the CDC. “People, labs, and other facilities that work with select agents are required to ensure that they can safely handle the virus as outlined in the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, 5th edition,” the CDC said. The 1918 pandemic killed as many as 100 million people worldwide. In recent years scientists succeeded in recovering fragments of the 1918 virus from the frozen body of a victim in Alaska and from preserved tissue samples from a US soldier who died in the pandemic. Those materials were used to sequence the virus’s genome.center_img “In addition, they are required to increase safeguards and security measures for the virus, including controlling access, screening personnel, and maintaining records to be included in a national database with records from others registered.” The designation means background checks on people working with the virus will be required, CDC spokesman Tom Skinner told CIDRAP News. Disease experts fear that the H5N1 avian flu virus now endemic in parts of Asia and moving into Europe may trigger a human flu pandemic that could echo the 1918 event. The CDC said the 1918 virus was reconstructed to help public health officials prepare for the threat of a new pandemic, to learn what made the virus so harmful, and to help develop better flu drugs and vaccines. Oct 5, 2005, CIDRAP News Story “Scientists recreate 1918 flu virus, see parallels with H5N1” The virus now is one of 42 agents and toxins classified as select agents under the Bioterrorism Act of 2002, the CDC said. Other select agents include the pathogens that cause smallpox, Ebola fever, anthrax, plague, and tularemia, as well as botulinum toxin. Oct 21, 2005 (CIDRAP News) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which recently reconstructed the 1918 pandemic influenza virus for research purposes, has classified the virus as a “select agent,” imposing special rules on groups that handle it.last_img read more

China said to be withholding H5N1 virus samples

first_imgApr 16, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – While Indonesia has drawn the media spotlight for withholding H5N1 virus samples for several months, China has been withholding H5N1 samples from humans for much longer, according to a Canadian Press (CP) report published yesterday.Keiji Fukuda of the World Health Organization said China has not shared any human H5N1 virus samples in about a year, according to the CP story by Helen Branswell. The country provided some H5N1 samples from birds in late 2006, the story said.Researchers need samples of the virus to monitor its evolution and spread, test for resistance to antiviral drugs, and develop vaccines.Indonesia revealed in early February that it had stopped sending H5N1 samples to the WHO to protest the use of the samples by drug companies to make vaccines priced out of Indonesia’s reach. In late March, the government promised to resume sending the samples in return for a WHO pledge to develop new guidelines for sample sharing and an interim promise not to share samples with drug companies without the source country’s approval.China sent its latest shipment of human H5N1 isolates to a WHO-affiliated laboratory in the spring of 2006, according to the CP report. The newest sample in the shipment was gleaned from a patient in late 2005 or early 2006, the story said. The report also said China in late 2006 provided the WHO with some H5N1 samples collected from birds, but they dated back to outbreaks that occurred a year earlier, in late 2005.Fukuda told CP the WHO has been negotiating with the Chinese health and agriculture ministries and remained hopeful that the talks would lead to a system for timely sharing of H5N1 samples.”We can sort of sit and try to hit countries over the head and say: ‘You should do this, you should share viruses or whatever,’ but it’s really not so helpful,” Fukuda said. “What is helpful is listening to what are the issues, trying to address those. And it’s become clear that part of the issues have to do with making sure that the access to [pandemic] vaccines is more equitable.”Fukuda also said that China, while withholding virus samples, has shared a significant amount of H5N1 information generated by its labs and has deposited whole or partial genetic sequences of a number of H5N1 viruses in public databases, according to the story. The CP report says access to vaccines may not be the reason for China’s reluctance to provide virus samples, because China, unlike Indonesia, makes flu vaccines for birds and humans. A Chinese company, Sinovac, has reported good results in trials of an H5N1 vaccine for humans. In other comments, Fukuda said the tone of discussions about the H5N1 problem is changing to reflect a growing realization that it is not an immediate emergency, as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) was, but potentially both an urgent and a long-term problem.”It’s not business as usual, but it’s not like the house is on fire—it’s somewhere in between,” he told CP.See also:Mar 27 CIDRAP News story “WHO, Indonesia reach accord on virus sharing”Sep 11, 2006, CIDRAP News story “Way cleared for China to share H5N1 samples”last_img read more

Amazon Alexa for the hospitality industry – the future of the sector

first_imgOne of the world-famous online stores, Amazon, announced a new program called “Alexa for Hospitality” this month. Alexa is designed as a virtual assistant that the user activates with voice commands, and is intended for implementation in catering facilities. The new system would contain key information about the guest, such as check-in and check-out dates. Also, Alexa in the role of a virtual reception opens the possibility for the guest to receive requests in real time, and among many “smart” functions, caterers can perform basic tasks from their workplace in accommodation units, such as timing the thermostat or raising the curtain, reports techcrunch.com.Amazon’s partner in testing this remarkable platform was the renowned hotel chain Marriott which will in its select units in Marriott, Westin, St. Regis, Aloft and Autograph Collection hotels this summer present guests with a unique Alexa experience. In the middle of the month, Alexa became available to other hoteliers and caterers, albeit by invitation.«At Marriott, we nurture continuous monitoring of modern practices and innovations in the field of catering, which only makes us more excited because we will be among the first to offer guests the Alex program. Many of our guests use speech technologies at home, so we want to expand our stay experience to keep up with guests ’preferences. Our intention is, also through the feedback provided by our guests, to implement the obtained data into the existing system and make it even better. Our guests can expect that we will regularly inform them about the new opportunities we have in the plan for Alex», Said Jennifer Hsieh, Vice President of Innovation for Customer Experience at Marriott International.Video Playerhttps://m.media-amazon.com/images/G/01/asp-marketing/Alexa_for_Hospitality_H264_720p._CB1529340223_.mp400:0000:0001:38Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume. For the purposes of the program, the accommodation unit must have an Echo device installed, since through the Echo system, the guest communicates with Alex and she can provide information about the hotel on request, switch to the reception or call maintenance or simply talk. Alexa currently supports the following devices: Amazon Echo Dot, Echo and Echo Plus. Amazon reports that Alexa is compatible with existing hotel technologies such as DigiValet, Intelity, Nuvola and Volar. As previously mentioned, Alexa contains a phone function, but also a number of “smart” services that can be adapted to the needs of the hotel, and in addition to light, curtains and thermostat, there are also functions “TV” and “radio”. In other words, the guest, as a digital entity, connects with the accommodation unit in the context of the entire hotel through Alexe, which provides him with a completely new and revolutionary catering experience. Modesty aside, this is a remarkable shift in the hospitality industry and offers an excellent and stable platform for communicating with guests in 2.0. the world.Amazon promises an almost flawless system that keeps escalations under control through “analytics” and “reports”, while crisis management is alarmed if the system goes “offline”. For perfect functionality, Amazon reports, Alexa will be subject to many upgrades to keep the system up to date with the latest trends in the world of digital services and applications.Alexa will represent the future for catering, still in its infancy, but certainly a pleasant refreshment. It can be assumed that it will also contribute to the recognition of hotels and other accommodation that have Alex implemented. The new experience of staying and overnight stays, to the great satisfaction of users, will soon become available to well-known apartment renters such as RedAwning and Two Roads Hospitality. What is left for us is to wait impatiently and check the system once it finds its entrance into the offer of the Croatian hospitality sector.
