Australia’s Zampa set to make his mark

first_imgNEW YORK, CMC :Exciting leg-spin prospect Adam Zampa says he is keen on making his mark in the upcoming Tri-Nation Series against hosts West Indies and South Africa, which bowls off in Guyana on Friday. With just two one-day internationals to his name, the 24-year-old from New South Wales said one of his major objectives for the Caribbean tour was making himself a fixture in the squad.”The conditions are going to suit spin bowling, that’s for sure, and I see it as another opportunity to try and cement my spot,” he said as the squad assembled here Sunday en route to the Caribbean.”I know there’s a lot of one-day cricket coming up in the next 12 months, so I’ll be trying to cement that spot. It’s going to be tough, obviously. There are some tough opponents coming up but I’m looking forward to bowling to some good players. Zampa has undergone a steep learning curve in the last few months. He made his international debut during the one-day series against New Zealand away and followed up with positive performances in the Twenty20 World Cup in India.EVENTUAL CHAMPIONHe then turned out for Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League, taking 12 wickets in five games, including a haul of six for 19 against eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in Visakhapatnam.More important, he said playing alongside the experienced former India Test and ODI captain, MS Dhoni, and national skipper Steve Smith, was a boost for his cricket.”It’s been a whirlwind couple of months for sure, particularly with the IPL. Not too many overseas spinners get that opportunity, so for me to have that opportunity straight off the back of the World Cup has been amazing,” said Zampa.”I think Melbourne Stars was good for me, playing under [David] Hussey in particular as a captain. I got to work with Trent Woodhill, my mentor, so ever since I made that decision, it’s kind of turned me around a little bit.”Australia open their campaign against West Indies at the National Stadium at Providence next Sunday.last_img
