After regulatory hurdles were cleared and a new antenna was installed on the station’s tower south of Wellington, the translator went on-the-air last week.White said the main advantage with the translator is it will be easier for listeners to pick up KLEY programming at night. Federal Communications Commission rules – and the laws of physics – require some AM radio stations to reduce their power at sunset.“It’s hard to pick up KLEY after dark, when we’re broadcasting at low power,” White said. “It can be especially frustrating if you’re trying to keep up with an out-of-town game.”Those days should be gone. The FCC has allowed daytime AM stations to simulcast on FM translators to give them the same broadcast area at night they enjoy during the day.Gordon Johnson, station owner and General Manager, said the new FM signal will be especially embraced by Crusader fans. It’s a change they – and advertisers who sponsor Wellington games — have been patiently waiting for, he said.“They’ve all stayed right here with us all these years,” Johnson said. “They definitely deserve this. It will be much better for them.”The changes aren’t done. White, who is also the station’s program and news director, is working on some programming changes that he said will help KLEY be the community partner it should be.“We’ll be providing community organizations in Sumner County an opportunity to talk with the community much more often, but I’m still finalizing that, so as cliché as it is to say, stay tuned,” he said.Follow us on Twitter.last_img
